Dear Potential Contributor,
Special Olympics (SO) is founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities
can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from
participation in individual and team sports.
Special Olympics Israel intends to send up to end 2006 a three delegation:
1. Germany Championship, held in Berlin September 10-17.
2. The Europe Youth Championship - Rome, Italy September 27 October 6.
3. The 7th Annual RCP Tiburon Mile Open Water Swim October 1st, 2006 in
San-Francisco CA, USA.
And Olympics Games in China October 2-11, 2007
The Special Olympics movement was founded by Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968
In the USA. Today there are over 2¼ million individual athletes with intellectual disabilities
active in 169 countries over the world.
The goal of Special Olympics worldwide is to change attitudes toward people with
intellectual disabilities emphasizing potential, ability and acceptance.
S.O. Israel relies solely on donations and sponsors to provide the local and national
programming of the over 4900 athletes that make up S.O. Israel.
The sport branches are: athletics, aquatics, cycling, equestrian, basketball, football,
gymnastics, table and lawn tennis, judo, bowling, and motor activity.
These S.O. Israel athletes represent all that is Israel. They come from Moshav, Kibbutz,
Village and City, from the North to the South of Israel, veteran Israeli families and Immigrant
families and covering all the social and economic levels in our society. The delegations
includes athletes with Down syndrome, Autism, Mild Brain Damage
and Learning Disabilities – all intellectually challenged and
privileged to be Special Olympics athletes.
